Purpose: The purpose for InsulVent is to allow homeowners with crawl-space foundations to winterize their crawl-space vents from the outside of the house by inserting a block of foam insulation into the door of the InsulVent in the fall and then removing it in the spring. This eliminates the need for getting into the crawl-space or propping something over the exterior of an existing vent to keep cold air out.
Components: InsulVent consists of a housing, door, screen and two blocks of insulation. All parts are replaceable.
Materials: The InsulVent housing, door and screen frame are made of high quality vinyl designed for exterior use. Vinyl, unlike metal, is a low-conductive material. The vinyl material comes with built in UV protection and is expected to hold up against the elements for many years. The insulation-block insert is 2” closed-cell EPS Foam with an R-Value of 8.8. It is custom cut to ensure a tight fit and keep wind leakage to a minimum.
Dimensions: The front exposure of the InsulVent housing is 18” x 10” The insert portion of the vent is approximately 15 7/8” x 7 7/8” This is the size of a cement block. The vent fits into the space where a cement block is left out of the foundation. The depth of the vent is 3.25” which allows room for both a screen and a 2” thick block of EPS foam. The vent with insulation and screen weighs 2.3 lbs.
Method of Attachment: Most quality construction glues or cement repair caulks/adhesives can be used to attach InsulVent to the foundation wall. A bead of caulk is placed around the back of the housing flange and the vent is then pushed into place. This seals around the outer edge of the vent as well as adhering it to the foundation. Highly siliconized caulks should be avoided as they tend not to adhere well to plastic.
Use: The vent is designed for both new construction and as a replacement vent in existing foundations. In some existing homes, the siding overlaps the top block of the foundation which would prohibit the InsulVent from being installed. An inspection of the back of the vent housing will reveal a cut-off line. This is to reduce the overall size of the housing making it easier to install after the existing vent has been removed.
Warranty: InsulVent has a limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship
