Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are your shipping costs?
A: You can view an estimate of shipping costs
by viewing your cart.  However, final shipping costs will be displayed on the Invoice you see before confirming your order.

Q:  How do I install your vent?  We are building a new house.
A:  Installing in new construction:

The cement mason normally leaves a cement block out of the foundation where a vent is to be installed.  InsulVent is designed to fit this opening.  After the foundation has cured for a few days:

  • Place a liberal bead of caulk* around the back of the InsulVent housing flange
  • Push the vent tightly into place.
  • Any caulk escaping around the edge of the flange should be cleaned off.
  • Allow the caulk to set for a day before operating the door.

Q:  What kind of caulk should I use?
A:  Avoid caulks that have a high silicone content.  They do not adhere well to vinylYou should use:

  •  Concrete caulk or concrete & mortar repair caulk
  • Most construction adhesives and grey-latex caulks also work well.

Q:  Can I replace my old vents with InsulVents?
A:  InsulVents are designed to be used in both new and replacement applications.  To replace existing vents:

Make sure the opening is large enough to fit the InsulVent.  To check this, measure the size of the opening between two blocks.  The joint mortar will be removed when preparing the opening.  The rough opening should be a minimum of 16” x 7”.  In most instances, InsulVent will install easily after the rough opening has been prepared.

  • Knock out and remove old vent from the foundation with something like a pry bar and hammer
  • Remove all old joint mortar from the opening.  A cold chisel or screwdriver is useful for this.
  • Follow installation steps as for new construction

Q:  Our siding overlaps our vent.  Can we still install your InsulVents?
A:  Yes, you  can.  If the siding overlaps the vent opening enough to interfere with the installation:

  • Before removing your existing vents, measure the height of the opening from the bottom of the siding to the bottom of the rough opening.  It must be at least 7” for the door to swing properly
  • Remove the smaller piece of foam from the top of the InsulVent housing.  It should pull off easily.  Keep it for reinstallation later
  • Run a utility knife in cut-off groove on upper back side of  Vent housing flange and remove the top piece of flange.
  • Pry siding back enough to insert the InsulVent.  Follow installation steps as for new construction
  • Reach inside to replace the small piece of foam if there is adequate space.
